وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَنْقَزِيُّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُهَاجِرٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: " أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَلِّمُ فِي الْجِنَازَةِ تَسْلِيمَةً خَفِيَّةً ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to give a quiet salam in the funeral prayer.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، ثنا أَبُو كَامِلٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، ثنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ، يَقُولُ لِسَعِيدٍ: " مِنْ سُنَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ أَنْ يُكَبِّرَ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ يَجْتَهِدَ لِلْمَيِّتِ فِي الدُّعَاءِ، ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمَ فِي نَفْسِهِ " وَكَذَلِكَ رُوِيَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ وَعِنْدِي أَنَّهُ غَلَطٌ وَالصَّوَابُ رِوَايَةُ مَنْ رَوَاهَا عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ.
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sa'id: Part of the Sunnah method of the funeral prayer is that one says the takbir, sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then makes earnest supplication for the deceased, then gives the salam inwardly.
Likewise it was narrated from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad from Ma'mar, and in my view it is an error; the correct version is the narration of those who narrated it from al-Zuhri from Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf.
