Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was behind Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) at a funeral, and he recited Surah al-Fatihah [Surah al-Fatihah: 1-7]. When he gave the salam, I asked him about it, and he said that it is the Sunnah and it is the truth. Ibrahim bin Hamzah narrated it from Ibrahim bin Sa'd and said that he recited Surah al-Fatihah [Surah al-Fatihah: 1-7] and also a (further) surah.
The mention of the surah in it is not preserved (ghayr mahfuz).

Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said that one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed him: "The Sunnah in the funeral prayer is that the imam says takbir, then after the first takbir recites Surah al-Fatihah silently to himself, then sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in the takbirs makes sincere supplication for the deceased without reciting anything, then gives the salam silently to himself."

Al-Dahhak bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said the same as what Abu Umamah said. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates it (through another chain) from one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By this, the narration of Mutarrif regarding the mention of Surah al-Fatihah is strengthened.

Ubayd bin al-Sabbaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in a funeral prayer. When he said the first takbir, he recited Surah al-Fatihah so that I heard it from behind. Then he said the takbirs after that, until, when one takbir remained, he recited the tashahhud like the tashahhud of the prayer. Then he said takbir and finished.
