أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الْعُطَارِدِيُّ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ نُبَيْطٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الصُّفَّةِ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ مَاتَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: " نَعَمْ " فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ قِيلَ: وَيُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَكَيْفَ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: " يَجِيئُونَ عُصْبًا عُصْبًا فَيُصَلُّونَ " فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ، فَقَالُوا: هَلْ يُدْفَنُ وَأَيْنَ؟ فَقَالَ " حَيْثُ قَبَضَ اللهُ رُوحَهَ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْبِضِ اللهُ رُوحَهَ إِلَّا فِي مَكَانٍ طَيِّبٍ " فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ.
Sayyiduna Salim bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the People of the Suffah, reports that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to him, then came out. It was said to him: "Has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away?" He said: "Yes." So all of them became certain that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. Then it was said: "How will his (peace and blessings be upon him) funeral prayer be offered?" He said: "People will enter group by group and invoke blessings (pray)." And the people understood it to be as Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. Then they asked: "Will he be buried, and where will he be buried?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He will be buried in the very place where Allah took his soul, for Allah takes his soul only in a pure place." And the people knew that the matter was just as he was saying.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، ⦗٤٩⦘ ثنا يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنِي الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: " لَمَّا صُلِّيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُدْخِلَ الرِّجَالُ فَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ إِرْسَالًا حَتَّى فَرَغُوا، ثُمَّ أُدْخِلَ النِّسَاءُ فَصَلَّيْنَ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أُدْخِلَ الصِّبْيَانُ فَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُدْخِلَ الْعَبِيدُ فَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ إِرْسَالًا لَمْ يَؤُمَّهُمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدٌ " قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: وَذَلِكَ لِعِظَمِ أَمْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَبِي هُوَ وَأُمِّي وَتَنَافُسِهِمْ فِي أَنْ لَا يَتَوَلَّى الْإِمَامَةَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَيْهِ وَاحِدٌ وَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ مَرَّةً بَعْدَ مَرَّةٍ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ أَنْبَأَ الرَّبِيعُ، قَالَ: قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ: فَذَكَرَهُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When prayer was offered for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the men entered a few at a time and prayed individually without an imam, until they had finished. Then the women entered and they too invoked blessings upon him (peace and blessings be upon him); then the children entered and invoked blessings; then the slaves entered and they too invoked blessings; and no one led the funeral prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as imam.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This was because of the greatness of his (peace and blessings be upon him) standing, may my father and mother be ransomed for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and so that people would not vie over one particular person leading the funeral prayer; rather, blessings were invoked upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) time after time.
