أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْبَصْرِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، ثنا قَبِيصَةُ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ: أَرَاهُ قَدْ رَفَعَهُ شَكُّ قَبِيصَةَ قَالَ: " الرَّاكِبُ يَسِيرُ خَلْفَ الْجِنَازَةِ وَالْمَاشِي يَمْشِي خَلْفَهَا وَأَمَامَهَا، وَعَنْ يَسَارِهَا وَمَيَامِنِهَا، وَالسَّقْطُ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَيُدْعَى لِأَبَوَيْهِ بِالْعَافِيَةِ وَالرَّحْمَةِ ".
Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I think Qabisah, expressing his doubt, said: "The rider goes behind the funeral, and the one on foot walks behind it, in front of it, and to its right and left. The funeral prayer is offered for the miscarried child, and supplication is made for his parents for wellbeing and mercy."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ جَنَاحُ بْنُ نُذُيْرِ بْنِ جَنَاحٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ، أنبأ أَبُو جَعْفَرِ بْنُ دُحَيْمٍ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، أنبأ أَبُو غَسَّانَ، ثنا حَسَنُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى الْجَابِرِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَاجِدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ سَأَلْنَا نَبِيَّنَا صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ السَّيْرِ بِالْجِنَازَةِ، فَقَالَ: " السَّيْرُ مَا دُونَ الْخَبَبِ إِنْ يَكُ خَيْرًا يُعَجَّلْ إِلَيْهِ وَإِنْ يَكُ سِوَى ذَلِكَ فَبُعْدًا لِأَهْلِ النَّارِ الْجِنَازَةُ مَتْبُوعَةٌ، وَلَا تَتْبَعُ لَيْسَ مَعَهَا مَنْ يَقْدَمُهَا "، أَبُو مَاجِدٍ مَجْهُولٌ، وَيَحْيَى الْجَابِرُ ضَعَّفَهُ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّقْلِ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the pace of walking with the funeral, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The pace should be without running. If it is good, it will be brought to it quickly; and if it is otherwise, then away with the people of the Fire. The funeral is followed, it is not made to follow; there should be no one with it who walks ahead of it."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، أنبأ شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ الْجُهَنِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ زَائِدَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا كَانَا يَمْشِيَانِ أَمَامَ الْجِنَازَةِ وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَمْشِي خَلْفَهَا، فَقِيلَ: لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّهُمَا يَمْشِيَانِ أَمَامَهَا، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّهُمَا يَعْلَمَانِ أَنَّ الْمَشْيَ خَلْفَهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الْمَشْيِ أَمَامَهَا كَفَضْلِ صَلَاةِ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِ فَذًّا وَلَكِنَّهُمَا سَهْلَانِ يَسْهُلَانِ لِلنَّاسِ " ⦗٣٩⦘ زَائِدَةُ هَذَا هُوَ ابْنُ خِرَاشٍ، وَقِيلَ ابْنُ أَوْسِ بْنِ خِرَاشٍ الْكِنْدِيُّ يَرْوِي عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ، وَالْآثَارُ فِي الْمَشْيِ أَمَامَهَا أَصَحُّ وَأَكْثَرُ وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ.
The son of Abd al-Rahman bin Abza narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to walk in front of the funeral, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to walk behind it. It was said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): They both (al-Siddiq and al-Faruq, may Allah be pleased with them both) walk in front of the funeral? He said: They know that walking behind it is better than walking in front of it, just as a man's prayer in congregation is better than his praying alone; but they are easy-going and make things easy for the people.
This Za'idah is Ibn Khirash, and it is also said Ibn Aws bin Khirash al-Kindi; he narrates this hadith from Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abza. The reports about walking in front of it are more authentic and more numerous, and success is from Allah.
