It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile time, for Allah is time."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Arabs used to revile time and speak ill of it at times of calamity (that is, at death, old age and destitution), and they would say: The calamities of time will destroy us; and that is the night and the day, and their becoming new and old. And they would say: The hardships of time have befallen them, and time has ruined them. So time is this very night and day, and therefore they would condemn time, saying that it is what annihilates us and does such things to us. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile time"; for what is meant by it is the One who runs them and turns them, and when you revile these causes, that is reviling their Creator and Maker. So you would be reviling Allah Almighty, for He is the Maker and Creator, and all of this is in His control.
