أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا الْعَنْبَرِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ: " كَانَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَقُولُونَ: إِنَّ الدَّهْرَ هُوَ الَّذِي يُهْلِكُنَا، هُوَ الَّذِي يُمِيتُنَا وَيُحْيِينَا، فَرَدَّ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَوْلَهُمْ ".
Sufyan bin Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The people of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) used to say: It is time that destroys us; it is what causes us to die and gives us life. So Allah Almighty refuted their saying."
