Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice after the prayer and said: "Whoever prays as we pray and sacrifices as we sacrifice has attained the sacrifice, and whoever sacrifices before the prayer, that is a goat for meat." Sayyiduna Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I sacrificed before coming to the prayer, and I knew that today is a day of eating and drinking, so I hurried; I ate myself and also fed my family and neighbors. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is a goat for meat." He said: I have a young goat which is better than two goats for meat; will it suffice for me? He said: "Yes, but it will not suffice for anyone after you."

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of Eid al-Adha the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards al-Baqi'. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs there, then turned towards us and said: "Our first act on this day of ours is to begin with the prayer, then to offer our sacrifice. Whoever does that has attained our Sunnah, and whoever slaughters before that, it is only meat which he has hastened for his family; it is not a sacrifice." My maternal uncle stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have already slaughtered, and I have a jadha'ah which is better than a musinnah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slaughter it, but after you a jadha'ah will not suffice for anyone."
Zubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard some of our companions say: "A jadha'ah of a goat."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon: "Whoever slaughtered before the prayer, let him sacrifice another animal in place of the one he slaughtered, and whoever has not slaughtered, let him slaughter with the name of Allah."
