Ubaydullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him): What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite in the two Eids? He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Qaf. By the glorious Qur'an [Surah Qaf: 1] and The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split [Surah al-Qamar: 1]."
Al-Shafi'i said in the narration of Harmalah: This is established if Ubaydullah met Abu Waqid al-Laythi. The Shaykh said: This is because Ubaydullah did not reach the days of Umar and his questioning of him; because of this defect al-Bukhari left this hadith out of the Sahih, while Muslim recorded it, because Fulayh bin Sulayman narrated it from Damrah, from Ubaydullah, from Abu Waqid, who said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me; so the hadith thereby became connected (mawsul).

Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite in the Eid prayer. I said: "The Hour has drawn near" [Surah al-Qamar: 1] and "Qaf. By the glorious Qur'an" [Surah Qaf: 1].

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the two Eids and on Friday the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Surah al-A'la: 1] and "Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming Event?" [Surah al-Ghashiyah: 1], and when Friday and Eid fell on the same day, he would recite them in both. However, al-Tayalisi did not mention the words "and sometimes they both fell together" to the end.

Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the two Eids the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Surah al-A'la: 1] and "Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming Event?" [Surah al-Ghashiyah: 1].
The Shaykh said: There is no contradiction between this and the hadith of Abu Waqid; rather, this one reports a recitation that took place on one Eid, and that one reports a recitation that took place on another Eid. There were several Eids in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so this narrator is truthful that he recited what is mentioned here on an Eid, and the other is truthful that he recited what he mentioned on an Eid. Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said this in the narration of Harmalah.
