Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Before Eid, al-Walid bin Uqbah came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Abu Musa and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with them) and said to them: Eid is near; how should the takbirs be said in it? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Begin with the takbir with which the prayer is opened, praise Allah, and send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then supplicate, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same; then recite and bow. Then when you stand, recite, praise Allah, and send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then supplicate, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same, then say a takbir and do the same. This is the saying of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). We follow him in pausing between every two takbirs for remembrance, since nothing contrary to it is narrated from anyone else; but we differ from him in the number of takbirs and in placing them before the recitation in both rak'ahs, on the basis of the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then the practice of the people of the two Sanctuaries, and the practice of the Muslims to this day.

It is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Seven and five takbirs are to be said in the two Eids, with the remembrance of Allah between every two takbirs; this way is the Sunnah."
