Nafi' narrates from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go to the Eid prayer ground on the day of Eid, and the people would carry a spear with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the Eid prayer ground, it would be planted in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could take it as a sutrah (screen).

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the Eid prayer ground on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, a spear would be brought in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him); it would be planted in the Eid prayer ground and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would take it as a sutrah (screen). That was an open space; there was no building there by which a sutrah could be made. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would order the spear to be brought, and it would be planted in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray facing it.

(a) Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for Eid, he would order a spear. It would be brought in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would take it as a sutrah (screen), and the people would be with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) did the same while travelling. Then the rulers adopted this practice.
(b) Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A spear or the like used to be carried with him (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) could take it as a sutrah.
