Qays bin Ubad said: I heard Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) swearing an oath that the verse: "These are two adversaries who disputed concerning their Lord" [Surah al-Hajj: 19] was revealed about those who came forward to duel on the day of Badr, namely Hamzah, Ali, Ubaydah bin al-Harith, Utbah and Shaybah (the sons of Rabi'ah), and al-Walid bin Utbah.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the story of Badr: Utbah, his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walid called for a duel, and some young men of the Ansar came out. Utbah said: "We have no need of you; we want to duel with the sons of our paternal uncles, that is, Banu Abd al-Muttalib." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ali, Ubaydah and Hamzah, stand up." Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) faced Utbah, Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) faced Shaybah, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) faced al-Walid. Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Utbah, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed al-Walid, and Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Shaybah. Shaybah cut off the leg of Sayyiduna Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Hamzah and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) rescued him, until he died at al-Safra'. Ibn Ishaq narrates from his companions about this story that Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) faced Utbah, Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) faced Shaybah, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) faced al-Walid.
