Abu Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to us while we were in Azerbaijan: O Utbah bin Farqad! This was not obtained by your toil, nor by the toil of your father or your mother. He said it three times, and said: Let the Muslims eat their fill in their dwellings of what you eat your fill of in your own dwelling; beware of luxury, of resembling the idolaters, and of wearing silk garments; for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade wearing silk garments, except for the measure of two fingers."

Abd al-Malik narrates from Ata' concerning embroidery on a garment; he intended to relate a hadith. Then he said: Abdullah, the freed slave of Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), narrated it. Ata' said: Relate the hadith. So he related the hadith in front of Ata', saying: Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) sent me to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), saying: It has reached me that you declare three things unlawful: first, fasting the whole of Rajab; second, the red silk saddle cushion; and third, the embroidered garment. He said: As for what you mentioned of fasting the whole of Rajab, then what of one who fasts perpetually? As for the striped garment, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter." I fear that the (silk) embroidered garment may also count as silk. And about the red saddle cushion he said: This is Ibn Umar's saddle cushion; I hope you will see it. I said: Yes. Then he went to Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) and informed her. Abdullah said: She brought out a Tayalisi cloak whose collar was of silk and whose sleeves were also of silk. She said: This is the cloak of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, this cloak was with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and when she passed away I took it. We would wash it for the sick and seek healing through it.

Abdullah, the freed slave of Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), said: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) buy a Syrian garment in the market; he saw a red thread in it, so he returned it. I told Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) about this, and she said: O girl! Hand me the cloak of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She brought a Tayalisi cloak which had silk buttons, silk sleeves and silk patches.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked a garment of pure silk; "but if there is silk embroidery, or the warp of the garment is silk, there is no harm in it." These are the words of Yahya's hadith; in Amr's narration it has "forbade" in place of "disliked", and he said: "Silk stripes, and the warp of the garment being silk, there is no harm in it."

(a) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade pure silk"; if its warp is silk, then there is no harm in wearing it.
(b) In the hadith of Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) there is: a garment whose warp is silk and whose weft is not silk, and which is not pure silk, there is no harm in wearing it.

It is narrated from Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not ride on a red silk saddle cushion, nor do I wear qassi cloth, nor yellow-dyed cloth, nor do I wear a garment fastened with silk buttons."
Note: The red silk saddle cushion means the saddle of the non-Arabs on which they ride. That is, a shirt whose cuffs are of silk. The silk that is permitted, he (peace and blessings be upon him) has explained. As for Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) bringing out the cloak, it is possible that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used it on occasions of battle.

The suits (hullahs) that were made for the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) cost a thousand dirhams or even more.
The Shaykh said: The suit (hullah) that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) wore consisted of two garments, a lower wrap and an upper sheet; these were of silk.
