Hafs bin Ubaydullah bin Anas bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the roof of the mosque rested on trunks of date palms. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered the sermon, he would stand by a trunk. When the pulpit was made, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would be upon that pulpit, and we heard from that trunk a sound like the sound of camels heavy with young, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and placed his hand on it, and it became quiet.

Abdul Aziz bin Abi Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that a group came to Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him); they were disputing about the minbar, as to what wood it was made of. He said: I know what wood it is made of and who made it. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the first day he sat on it. The narrator says: I said: O Abu Abbas, tell us. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to a woman (Abu Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: he also named her), "Tell your carpenter slave to make a wooden minbar for me, so that I may sit on it and admonish the people." He made three steps for it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order and it was placed in this spot. It was of tamarisk wood. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand on it and say the takbir, that is, 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), and the people also said 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). Then he bowed, then raised his head from bowing, came down from the minbar walking backwards and made the prostration at the foot of the minbar. Then he went back, until he finished the prayer. Then he turned to the people and said: "O people, I did this so that you may follow me and learn my prayer."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand by a tree on Friday. A woman or a man of the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, shall we not make a minbar? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, then make it." So they made a minbar. When Friday came and he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the minbar, that palm trunk began to cry like a child. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the minbar and drew it close to himself, and it fell silent. He said: It was crying because of the remembrance (dhikr) it used to hear.

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had grown heavy: "Shall I not make a minbar for you (peace and blessings be upon him) that will carry - or he said: gather, or a word like it - your bones?" So they made two or three steps for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it. Then the trunk that was in the mosque, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lean on while delivering the sermon, cried. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the minbar, held it close to himself and said something to it - I do not know what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went up onto the minbar. In those days the pillars of the mosque were of palm trunks and the roof of palm branches.
