Abu Salamah narrates from both Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On Friday let him take a bath, use the tooth-stick (miswak), put on good clothes and apply perfume if he has any. Then let him not step over people's necks. Then let him pray as much as Allah wills, and when the imam comes out let him fall silent. This is an expiation until the next Friday."

Ibn Shihab narrates from Tha'labah bin Abi Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), on Friday they would keep praying until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came out. When he came and sat on the pulpit and the caller gave the call to prayer, they would all sit and talk, until, when the caller fell silent and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, they would all fall silent and not a single one of them would speak.

Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrates the hadith in the same way, with the words "when the caller fell silent". Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) added that when the imam came out they would end their prayer, and when the imam spoke they would fall silent.

Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Tha'labah bin Abi Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that after the imam sits on the pulpit, voluntary prayer should end, and when he gives the sermon, conversation should end. The people would talk among themselves while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the pulpit; when the caller fell silent, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand, and then no one would speak until he had finished both sermons. When the prayer was established, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would come down and the people would talk.

Damdam bin Jaws narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The coming out of the imam on Friday ends the prayer, and his sermon ends conversation."
This is a gross error. Abd al-Razzaq narrated it from Ma'mar, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as his own saying, not attributed to the Prophet. Ibn Abi Dhi'b and Yunus narrated it from al-Zuhri from Tha'labah bin Abi Malik, and Malik narrated it from al-Zuhri and distinguished al-Zuhri's words from Tha'labah's, as we mentioned; and that is the mahfuz (preserved) version according to Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli.

Abu al-Khalil narrates from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade prayer at midday, except on Friday, because Hell is stoked every day except on Friday."
