Abu Ali al-Hamdani (may Allah have mercy on him), who lived in Alexandria, says: I once set out on a journey, and Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was with me. We said to him: "Lead us in prayer." He said: "I am not going to lead. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever leads the people and completes the prayer at the correct time, there is reward for him and for them; and whoever falls short in any of that, the burden is on him and not on those who follow him.'"

Abu Ma'mar (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The iqamah was called, and they kept pushing one another forward. Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward and led them in prayer, then said: "You must find an imam other than me, or else pray individually." Al-Mughirah says: I narrated this hadith to Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) while Ibrahim was present, and Mujahid said: "Furada (singly)." Ibrahim said: "Furada and wuhdanan are the same."
