Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would eat food and send the leftover food to Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him). Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a bowl of food from which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had eaten nothing at all, because it contained garlic. Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: O Messenger of Allah, is it unlawful? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not unlawful, but I dislike it because of its smell." Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I too dislike what you (peace and blessings be upon him) dislike.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When Khaybar was conquered, we came upon some vegetables that included garlic, and we ate a great deal of it, as we were also hungry. Then we went to the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed the smell of garlic. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats of this foul plant, let him not come near the mosque." So the people began to say: It has been made unlawful, it has been made unlawful. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, what Allah has made lawful is not unlawful. But I dislike it because of its smell."

I joined the prayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed its smell, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats of this foul plant, let him not come near our place of prayer until its smell has gone." I completed my prayer, and when I had given the salam I said: O Messenger of Allah, I adjure you to give me your hand. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his hand, and I put it into the sleeve of my shirt and brought it to my chest. He (peace and blessings be upon him) found it bandaged there, and said: "You have an excuse," or: "I see that you have an excuse."

Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered the sermon on Friday, and in it was: O people, you eat from these two foul plants, namely onion and garlic, yet I used to see that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed their smell on someone, he would have him taken out to al-Baqi'. So whoever wishes to eat them, let him kill their smell by cooking them.
