Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you reaches the morning and has not prayed witr, let him pray witr."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4517
Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon saying that whoever is overtaken by the morning has no witr. This was mentioned to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda has erred, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would reach the morning and then pray witr.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4518
Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying witr while the people had stood up for the morning prayer.
Only Hatim bin Salim al-Basri, who is also called al-A'raji, narrated it, and the hadith of Ibn Jurayj is more authentic than it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the morning and then prayed witr.

Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reached the morning and had not prayed witr, or the morning was near, or he reached the morning, and then he prayed witr.
This (version) is more likely to be correct.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4521
Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is reported from al-Agharr al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have reached the morning and have not prayed witr? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Witr is the prayer of the night." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said three or four times: "Stand up and pray witr."

Abu Zabyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the market and I was behind him. He stopped on the steps and faced the dawn, then recited: "By the night as it departs,
and by the morning as it breathes" [Surah al-Takwir: 17, 18], then he said: "Where is the one who was asking about witr? This is an excellent time for witr."

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of this door and said: This is the best time for witr. Then the iqamah was called at that very time.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4524
Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out at the time Ibn al-Nabbah called the adhan, and recited: "By the night as it departs, and by the morning as it breathes" [Surah al-Takwir: 17-18]. Then he said: Where is the one who was asking about witr? This is the best time to pray witr.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4525
Asim bin Damrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some people came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked about witr. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Have you asked anyone else about it as well? They said: We asked Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: There is no witr after the adhan. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He has gone to an extreme and overstepped the bounds in giving the fatwa. The time of witr is between Isha and the morning prayer; whenever you pray witr, it is good.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4526
Al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) say that witr is between the two prayers, that is, Isha and Fajr; whenever you pray witr, it is good.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4528
Al-Aswad said: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): When do you pray witr? She said: Between the adhan and the iqamah. And the mu'adhdhins would not call the adhan until they reached the morning. The narrator said: I think this statement is from al-Aswad or Abu Ishaq, and there is reservation about it.
(b) The first adhan in the Hijaz was before the rising of dawn, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to pray before the rising of dawn; or he meant the second adhan by it.
(c) Abu Ishaq said that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to pray witr between the adhan and the iqamah.
(Note) So her position on this matter goes back to what is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4529
Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) slept, then woke up and said to his servant: Go and see what the people have done. In those days Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) had become blind. The servant went and came back, and said: The people are returning after the morning prayer. So Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up and prayed witr, then prayed the morning prayer.

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead his people in prayer. One day he came out for the morning prayer and the mu'adhdhin began to call the iqamah. Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) made him stop, then prayed witr, and after that he led them in the morning prayer.
(b) Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Whoever slept through witr should pray witr after Fajr, but it is not appropriate for anyone to deliberately pray witr after the rising of dawn.
