Abu al-Khayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I saw a leather garment on Ibn Wa'lah al-Saba'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and I touched it. He said: Why do you touch it? I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about it and told him that we live in the Maghrib, and with us are Berbers and Magians; we bring a ram and they slaughter it, while we do not eat their slaughtered animals, and we bring a waterskin with grease in it. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tanning the hide is its purification."

Thabit al-Bunani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was sitting with Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) in the mosque when an old man with two braids came and said: O Abu Isa! Tell me what you heard from your father (may Allah be pleased with him) about the wild ass. He said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) told me: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said: May I pray on the hide of a wild ass? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray on it when it is tanned." When he left, I asked: Who was this? They said: "Suwayd bin Ghafalah" (may Allah have mercy on him).
