It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque when he saw a man praying. When the man finished the prayer, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Wa alaykas-salam' (And upon you be peace). Go and pray again, for you have not prayed." He went back, prayed again, then came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same to him. The man prayed two or three times, then said: O Messenger of Allah! I cannot pray better than what you are seeing, so teach me how I should pray. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution thoroughly, then say the takbir; when you are standing straight, recite Surah al-Fatihah. Then recite whatever of the Qur'an you know, then bow with the utmost calmness. After that raise your head from bowing and stand completely straight and say 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah has heard the one who praised Him), then prostrate with complete calmness, then raise your head from prostration and sit with calmness, and then do the same throughout your entire prayer."

Abu al-Sa'ib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): Sometimes I am behind the imam. He pressed my arm and said: O Persian! When the servant says: 'All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds' [Surah al-Fatihah: 2], Allah Almighty says: My servant has praised Me. When the servant says: 'The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' [Surah al-Fatihah: 3], Allah Almighty says: My servant has extolled Me. When the servant says: 'Master of the Day of Judgement' [Surah al-Fatihah: 4], Allah Almighty says: My servant has glorified Me, and this verse is between Me and My servant. When the servant says: 'You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help' [Surah al-Fatihah: 5], Allah Almighty says: This is between Me and My servant, and the end of the surah is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. When the servant says: 'Guide us to the straight path' [Surah al-Fatihah: 6], to the end of the surah."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was standing in prayer. He called out to him: "O Ubayy! Come here." Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) hurriedly finished his prayer, then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "O Ubayy! What prevented you from coming when I called you? Have you not heard this saying of Allah: 'O you who believe! Respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you' [Surah al-Anfal: 24]?" Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I made a mistake; whenever you call me, I will respond to your call, even if I am praying. He said: "Would you like me to teach you a surah the like of which Allah has not revealed in the Injil, nor in the Torah, nor is it in the Zabur, nor is its like in the rest of the Qur'an?" Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Certainly, tell me! He said: "Do not leave the mosque before learning this surah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked on, about to leave the mosque, and when he reached the door to go out, Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The surah, O Messenger of Allah! So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, then said: "Ah yes! What do you recite in your prayer?" Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) recited Umm al-Qur'an, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul! No surah like it was sent down in the Torah, nor revealed in the Injil, nor in the Zabur, nor is there any surah like it in the Qur'an, and it is the Seven Oft-Repeated (verses) that Allah has given me."
Through another chain, a narration with the same meaning is reported from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him); it is about the story of Surah al-Fatihah, without the story of answering during the prayer.
