Sulayman, the freed slave of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that he heard Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not pray the same prayer twice in one day."

Sulayman, the freed slave of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: I came to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) at a place called al-Balat near Madinah. He was sitting while the people were praying the Asr prayer. I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! The people are praying and you are sitting? He said: I have already prayed, and I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Do not pray an obligatory prayer twice in one day."
Ali (bin Umar) said: Husayn al-Mu'allim is alone in narrating it from Amr bin Shu'ayb. And Allah Almighty knows best.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If this report is authentic, it is to be understood as meaning that if he had already offered the prayer in congregation, he should not pray it again; and his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, "An obligatory prayer is not to be prayed twice in one day", would mean that one should not pray both of them as obligatory. The basic point is that the command to repeat the prayer is optional, not binding. And Allah Almighty knows best.
