Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: During the expedition of Tabuk, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the sutrah (screen) of a person praying, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Something equal to the back-rest of a camel saddle."

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you places in front of himself something equal to the back-rest of a camel saddle, then no one's passing will harm him."

Musa bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him): We used to pray while animals kept passing in front of us. We mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When there is something equal to the back-rest of a camel saddle in front of one of you (as a sutrah), then nothing that passes in front of him will harm him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would make his mount kneel crosswise, then pray facing it. I said: When the camels had gone off, what would he do? He said: He would take the saddle, set it straight in front of him, and pray facing its back-rest.
(b) Another narration adds that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) also used to do this.

(a) A similar narration is reported through another chain.
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It seems that in the above narration «afara'ayta» (what do you think?) was said by Ubaydullah to Nafi', not that Nafi' said this to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), because Ibrahim bin Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) and Qasim bin Zakariyya (may Allah have mercy on him) both informed me that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, he would place the camel crosswise between himself and the qiblah.
(c) Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) states in his hadith: Ubaydullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him): "When the camels had gone off, then what would he do?" He told me that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would place the back-rest of the saddle between himself and the qiblah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out (for the prayer) on the day of Eid, he would order that the spear be carried along. It would be planted in front of him and he would pray facing it, with the people behind him. He would do the same on journeys, and it is for this reason that rulers have made it a practice to keep a spear with them.

Awn bin Abi Juhayfah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at al-Batha' when Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and called the adhan. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water for ablution and performed ablution. The people would take the water of the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and rub it on themselves. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) took the spear and walked along with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he planted it in front of him and prayed two rak'ahs. In front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) was the spiked staff, and women, donkeys and camels kept passing on the other side of it.
(b) Shu'bah reported this narration from Awn, through his father, saying that women and donkeys (and the like) kept passing behind the spear.
