Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he described the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): then he (peace and blessings be upon him) blew after the last prostrations and said: "Uff, uff." Then he said: "O my Lord, did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them? Did You not promise that You would not punish them while they seek forgiveness?" When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, the sun had cleared.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: What seems most likely is that this blowing resembled the sound of snoring, and that was because there was presented to him the punishment of some of those upon whom punishment had become due. So no one else is like him (peace and blessings be upon him) in saying "uff" in prayer, may my father and mother be ransomed for him, just as no one else was like him in seeing what he saw of their punishment.
Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Samad narrates from Ata' that in the last prostration of the second rak'ah he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to blow, that is, he was breathing heavily, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was weeping. He did not mention "uff, uff".
Abu Ishaq narrates from al-Sa'ib bin Malik, from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he mentioned nafkh (blowing) instead of ta'fif (saying "uff").
Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi (may Allah have mercy on him) held that "uff" is not speech unless the fa' is doubled, in which case it becomes three letters, from ta'fif. He said that one who blows does not produce a doubled fa' in his breath, nor can he pronounce the fa' properly from its point of articulation.

Abu Salih narrates: I was with Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) when a young relative of hers, whose hair reached his shoulders, came in to her. He stood up to pray and began blowing. She said: My son, do not blow, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to a black slave of ours: "O Rabah, put dust on your face (that is, place your forehead on the ground)."
Its narrator Maymun Abu Hamzah is da'if (weak). Another hadith on this is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' (from the Prophet), and it is extremely weak.

(a) It is reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he feared it might count as speech, that is, blowing in prayer.
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Blowing by itself is not speech, unless some speech that forms a word becomes apparent from it. If nothing intelligible is understood from it, then it is not speech.

Ayman bin Nabil narrates: I said to Qudamah bin Abdullah bin Ammar al-Kilabi (may Allah be pleased with him): In the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram), when we prostrate, we are troubled by pigeon feathers. He said: Blow (them away).
