Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he described the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): then he (peace and blessings be upon him) blew after the last prostrations and said: "Uff, uff." Then he said: "O my Lord, did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them? Did You not promise that You would not punish them while they seek forgiveness?" When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, the sun had cleared.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: What seems most likely is that this blowing resembled the sound of snoring, and that was because there was presented to him the punishment of some of those upon whom punishment had become due. So no one else is like him (peace and blessings be upon him) in saying "uff" in prayer, may my father and mother be ransomed for him, just as no one else was like him in seeing what he saw of their punishment.
Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Samad narrates from Ata' that in the last prostration of the second rak'ah he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to blow, that is, he was breathing heavily, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was weeping. He did not mention "uff, uff".
Abu Ishaq narrates from al-Sa'ib bin Malik, from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he mentioned nafkh (blowing) instead of ta'fif (saying "uff").
Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi (may Allah have mercy on him) held that "uff" is not speech unless the fa' is doubled, in which case it becomes three letters, from ta'fif. He said that one who blows does not produce a doubled fa' in his breath, nor can he pronounce the fa' properly from its point of articulation.
