It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade letting the garment hang down (sadl) in prayer and covering the mouth.

Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (may Allah be pleased with him) disliked letting the garment hang down, and he attributed this as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Amir al-Ahwal (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I asked Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) about letting the garment hang down, and he declared it disliked (makruh). I asked: "Is this established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, it is established."
Note: Letting the garment hang down on both sides from the head or the shoulders in prayer is called "al-sadl".
(b) It has been reported to us from Ata' bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he prayed with his garment hanging down.
(c) Perhaps he had forgotten this hadith, or he understood it to mean that it is impermissible only when done out of arrogance, and he did not do it out of arrogance. And Allah knows best.
Although this chain is munqati' (broken), it gives strength to the two connected narrations before it.

(a) It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he considered letting the garment hang down in prayer to be disliked (makruh), and he would say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it.
(b) It is reported from Abu Atiyyah al-Wadi'i that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who had let his garment hang down on both sides in prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his garment and wrapped it over him. This narration is munqati' (broken).
Only Bishr bin Rafi' narrated the first report, and he is not strong (laysa bil-qawi).

(a) Awn bin Abi Juhayfah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who had let his garment hang down in prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped that garment over him.
(b) Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also considered it disliked (makruh).
However, Hafs (bin Abi Dawud al-Qari) is da'if (weak) in hadith. We have also written it from the hadith of Ibrahim bin Tahman from al-Haytham; if that is preserved (mahfuz), it is better than the narration of Hafs al-Qari.

(a) It is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he went out and saw some people praying with their garments hanging down, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It is as though they are Jews who have come out of their 'fihr'."
(b) Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "Fihr" is their place of worship, or a place where they gather. And "sadl" means that a man lets his garment hang down in front without bringing its two edges together. If he brings the edges together, it is not "sadl".
(c) In one of the two narrations reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he declared it disliked (makruh). Likewise, Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) also called it disliked, and it is reported from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that there is no harm in it.
(d) The concession they gave in this is for one who does not do it out of arrogance; but one who does it out of arrogance is forbidden from it. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed to this same meaning in the book of al-Buwayti.

(a) Salim bin Abdullah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever trails his garment (below the ankles) out of arrogance, Allah Almighty will not look at him (with mercy) on the Day of Resurrection."
(b) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! One side of my waist-wrapper slips down, though I keep pulling it up." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not", or he said: "You are not one of those who do this out of arrogance."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 3314
(a) Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned something about the waist-wrapper, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! My waist-wrapper slips down on one side." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not one of them."
(b) It has been reported to us from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him), Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him), al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him), Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) that all of them considered covering the face in prayer to be disliked (makruh), and the narration of al-Hasan bin Dhakwan explicitly states its prohibition.
