Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the Fajr prayer, a number of believing women would attend (the prayer) with him, wrapped in large sheets. Then they would return (after the prayer) to their homes, and no one would recognise them (because of the darkness).

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ اخرجه الطحاوي في شرح المعاني: 1/ 377۔ البخاري بسند آخر 365»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you prays, let him tie on a waist-wrapper and put on an upper sheet."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) (and Nafi' held that it could only be from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you is about to pray, let him wear his two garments, for Allah Almighty is more deserving that one should adorn oneself for Him. If someone does not have two garments, let him tie on a waist-wrapper. And let none of you wrap the garment around himself in his prayer, that is, wrapping the sheet the way the Jews do, so that the hands cannot come out."

Nafi' narrates that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw me praying in a single garment and said: "Did I not clothe you?" I said: "Of course, you certainly did." He said: "If I were to send you somewhere in this state, would you go?" I said: "No." He said: "Then Allah Almighty is the most deserving that one should adorn oneself for Him." Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you prays in a single garment, let him tie it around his waist or flank, and do not wrap the sheet around yourselves the way the Jews do, so that even the hands cannot come out."

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: One day I stayed behind because of feeding the mounts, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to me while I was praying in a single garment. He said to me: "Were you not given two garments to wear?" I said: "Of course." He said: "What do you think, if I were to send you to one of the people of Madinah, would you go in a single garment?" I said: "No." He said: "Then is Allah more deserving that one should beautify oneself for Him, or people?" Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever has two garments, let him pray in both of them, and whoever has only one garment, let him tie it around his waist, and let him not wrap the sheet around himself the way the Jews do, so that the hands cannot come out."

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him): I was held back because of tending the mounts (feeding them and so on) (and he mentioned the narration). He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said; the narrator says: my strongest assumption is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let each of you pray in two garments, and if only one garment is available, let him tie it on, and let him not wrap the sheet around himself the way the Jews do, so that the hands cannot come out."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man stood up and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "May a man pray in a single garment?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does every one of you have two garments?" Then another man came and stood before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about praying in a single garment, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When Allah has given you abundance, then you too should be generous with yourselves. You should gather your garments: tie on a waist-wrapper and with it wear an upper sheet, a shirt or a cloak; or wear trousers and with them an upper sheet, a shirt or a cloak; or wear short drawers and with them a cloak or a shirt." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I think he also mentioned an upper sheet with the short drawers.

Abdullah bin Buraydah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying wrapped in a single sheet without its right end over the left shoulder and its left end over the right shoulder; likewise he (peace and blessings be upon him) also forbade praying in trousers alone without an upper sheet.
