قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا} [سورة: النور، آية رقم: 31].
Allah Almighty says: "And let them not display their adornment except what appears of it." [Surah al-Nur: 31]
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ ⦗٣١٩⦘ هُرْمُزَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: {وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا} [النور: ٣١] قَالَ: " مَا فِي الْكَفِّ وَالْوَجْهِ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in "And let them not display their adornment except what appears of it" [Surah al-Nur: 31], the adornment meant is the hands and the face.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ، أنبأ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، أنبأ مُسْلِمٌ الْمُلَائِيُّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ {وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ} [النور: ٣١] الْآيَةُ قَالَ: " الْكُحْلُ وَالْخَاتَمُ ".
Sa'id bin Jubayr narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, "And let them not display their adornment except what appears of it" [Surah al-Nur: 31], that he said: What is meant by it is kohl and the ring.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ، ثنا رَوْحٌ، ثنا حَاتِمٌ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي صَغِيرَةَ، أنبأ خُصَيْفٌ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهْرَ مِنْهَا} [النور: ٣١] قَالَ: " الْكُحْلُ وَالْخَاتَمُ " وَرُوِّينَا عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ مِثْلُ هَذَا.
Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And let them not display their adornment except what appears of it" [Surah al-Nur: 31], that he said: What is meant by it is kohl and the ring.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، أنبأ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ الْأَصَمِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: " مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا الْوَجْهُ وَالْكَفَّانِ " وَرُوِّينَا عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " الزِّينَةُ الظَّاهِرَةُ: " الْوَجْهُ وَالْكَفَّانِ " وَرُوِّينَا مَعْنَاهُ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ.
Ata bin Abi Rabah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that what is meant by "what appears of it" [Surah al-Nur: 31] is the face and the two hands.
It is reported from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: What is meant by it is the outward adornment, the face and the two hands; and something with the same meaning is also reported from Ata bin Abi Rabah and Sa'id bin Jubayr.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ الْأَنْطَاكِيُّ، وَمُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا الْوَلِيدُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ بْنِ عَبْدُوسٍ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ النَّصِيبِيُّ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ دُرَيْكٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، دَخَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلَيْهَا ثِيَابٌ شَامِيَّةٌ رِقَاقٌ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا ثم قَالَ: " مَا هَذَا يَا أَسْمَاءُ؟ إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْمَحِيضَ لَمْ يَصْلُحْ أَنْ يُرَى مِنْهَا إِلَّا هَذَا وَهَذَا، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى وَجْهِهِ وَكَفَّيْهِ " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الْمَالِينِيِّ. ⦗٣٢٠⦘ قَالَ: أَبُو دَاوُدَ: هَذَا مُرْسَلٌ، خَالِدُ بْنُ دُرَيْكٍ لَمْ يُدْرِكْ عَائِشَةَ. قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: مَعَ هَذَا الْمُرْسَلِ قَوْلُ مَنْ مَضَى مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ تعالى عَنْهُمْ فِي بَيَانِ مَا أَبَاحَ اللهُ مِنَ الزِّينَةِ الظَّاهِرَةِ، فَصَارَ الْقَوْلُ بِذَلِكَ قَوِيًّا وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ.
(a) It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing thin Syrian clothes. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away and said: "O Asma! When a woman reaches the age of puberty, it is not proper that any of her body be seen except this and this." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his face and his two palms.
(b) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is mursal; Khalid bin Durayk's meeting with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is not established.
(c) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is mursal, but together with the statements of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that have already passed, that Allah has permitted the outward adornment, this view becomes strong with these supporting reports. 'Wa billahi al-tawfiq' (And success is only through Allah).
(b) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is mursal; Khalid bin Durayk's meeting with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is not established.
(c) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is mursal, but together with the statements of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that have already passed, that Allah has permitted the outward adornment, this view becomes strong with these supporting reports. 'Wa billahi al-tawfiq' (And success is only through Allah).
