Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began asking about (the rulings of) Islam. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Five prayers in the day and night (offer them)." He said: Is there any other prayer due from me besides these? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but you may offer voluntary prayers."

It is narrated from Ibn Muhayriz that a man from Banu Kinanah called al-Mukhdaji heard a man in Sham called Abu Muhammad saying that witr is obligatory. Al-Mukhdaji says: I went to Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) and met him on his way while he was going to the mosque. I told him what Abu Muhammad had said, that witr is obligatory. Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Muhammad is mistaken. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah has made five prayers obligatory upon the servants. Whoever brings them, not neglecting any of them by taking their right lightly, has a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise. And whoever neglects these prayers has no covenant with Allah; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will admit him to Paradise."

(b) This is the view of Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). The other narrations that have come on this subject will be mentioned in the chapter on voluntary prayer, because that is their proper place.
