Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) calls the adhan at night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) calls the adhan."
Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) was a blind Companion; he would not call the adhan until it was said to him: "You have reached the morning, you have reached the morning."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) calls the adhan at night, so eat and drink until you hear the adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum."
In the narration of Yunus it is: Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) was the blind man concerning whom Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him" [Surah Abasa: 1-2]. He was a muezzin along with Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). Salim says that his eyesight was impaired; he would call the adhan when the people saw the dawn breaking and said to him: "Call the adhan."

Sayyiduna Ziyad bin al-Harith al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. He says: When it was time for the adhan of the Fajr prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me, and I gave the adhan. Then I began to say: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I give the iqamah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was looking towards the eastern horizon at the dawn, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, not until the dawn has broken." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and he (peace and blessings be upon him) relieved himself, then he turned towards me, and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had joined him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O brother of Suda', do you have any water?" I said: Yes, a little, which will not be enough for you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pour it into a vessel and bring it to me." I did so, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his palm in the water. Al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw a spring gushing forth from between his (peace and blessings be upon him) fingers. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I feel shy before my Lord, we would drink and give others to drink. Call out to my Companions: whoever needs water (let him take it)." I called out to them, and whoever wished took water. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for the prayer. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to give the iqamah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "The brother of Suda' gave the adhan, and whoever gives the adhan, he is the one who gives the iqamah." Al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So I gave the iqamah for the prayer.
