Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to the people of Yemen in which the obligatory duties, the Sunnahs and the blood-monies (diyat) were mentioned, and he sent Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) with these rulings. In it is: "No one should touch the Qur'an except one who is pure." Others besides him have narrated it as mursal. Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The menstruating woman and the person in a state of major impurity (junub) should not recite anything of the Qur'an." (This narration is not strong.)

Al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us that al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about the person in a state of major impurity, the woman in postnatal bleeding and the menstruating woman. He said: They have not been given permission to recite anything of the Noble Qur'an. We have also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), and then from Ata, Abu al-Aliyah, al-Nakha'i and Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on them), regarding the menstruating woman, that she does not recite the Qur'an.
