(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man sits between her four limbs and the private parts meet, ghusl becomes obligatory."
(b) In the hadith of Wahb bin Jarir: "When a man sits between her four limbs and then exerts himself, ghusl becomes obligatory." And in the hadith of Abu Nu'aym there are also these words: "then exerts himself."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the private parts meet, ghusl becomes obligatory, even if there is no ejaculation."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that they were sitting and mentioned what makes ghusl obligatory. Abu Musa (Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, one of the narrators) added these words in his narration: One of the Muhajirun who were present said: When the private part touches the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory. And one of the Ansar said: No, not until semen gushes out. Then the two narrations agree in meaning. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will bring you the answer. He went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), greeted her with salam, and then said: I want to ask you about something, but I feel shy. She said: Do not be shy to ask me about anything you would ask your own mother who gave birth to you; I am your mother. He says: I said: What makes ghusl obligatory? She said: You have come to one who knows it well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man sits between her four limbs and the private part touches the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory."
Yahya bin Sa'id narrated it from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Abu Musa without attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); only Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an attributed it to him from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, and the hadith of Ali bin Zayd is not used as evidence. The narration that Muslim recorded in the Sahih is an authentic, connected (musnad) narration.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man asked: If someone has intercourse with his wife and then becomes slack, is ghusl required of him? And Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sitting there, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I and this one (Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her) do that, and then we perform ghusl."

It is reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was asked about a man who has intercourse with his wife without ejaculating. She said: I and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did that, and we both performed ghusl together.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 769
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, when a man has intercourse with his wife and does not ejaculate (should he perform ghusl)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should wash what touched the woman, then perform ablution and pray."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 770
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) about a man who has intercourse but does not ejaculate. He said: "There is no ghusl upon him." Then he said: "I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he said: After that I asked Ali bin Abi Talib, al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam, Talhah bin Ubaydullah and Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them), and they related the same from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
(b) In the hadith of Abu Qilabah: "Only ablution is required for it."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 771
Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell me, if someone has intercourse with his wife and does not emit semen (that is, does not ejaculate), what should he do? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He should perform ablution as he does for prayer and wash his private part." He mentioned that he heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I then asked Ali bin Abi Talib, al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam and Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with them) about that, and they also instructed the same.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 772
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man of the Ansar and sent for him. He came out with water dripping from his head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps we made you hurry?" He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you are made to hurry or are withheld (without ejaculating), then ghusl is not upon you; ablution is."
This ruling is abrogated by the reports we mentioned earlier.

It is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that some men of the Ansar, among them Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), used to give the fatwa that "water is from water," and that there is no ghusl upon a man who goes to his wife and does not ejaculate. When this was mentioned to Sayyiduna Umar, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), they rejected it and said: "When the private part passes beyond the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory."
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), who had lived in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and was fifteen years old then, said: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that the fatwa "water is from water" was a concession in the early days of Islam, and this concession was given by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded ghusl.

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The fatwa "water is from water" was a concession in the early days of Islam; then it was forbidden.
Al-Zuhri did not hear this hadith from Sahl; he heard it only through some of his companions from Sahl.

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave people a concession in the early days of Islam because of the scarcity of clothes; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded ghusl and forbade that. (b) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) with an authentic, connected chain.

Mahmud bin Labid al-Ansari asked Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) about a man who goes to his wife, then becomes slack and does not ejaculate. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He should perform ghusl." Mahmud bin Labid said to him: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) did not hold that ghusl was required. At this, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) retracted that fatwa before he died."
(b) The statement of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) was about "water is from water"; his then abandoning it indicates that this had been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that afterwards another statement abrogated it. This is also the view of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan and Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 778
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab, Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say that when the private part meets the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory.

Ja'far narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: Whatever makes the prescribed punishment (hadd) obligatory also makes ghusl obligatory.

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): What makes ghusl obligatory? She said: O Abu Salamah, do you know what your example is? Your example is that of a chick who sees the rooster crowing and cries out along with it. "When the private part meets the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory."

Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Abidah (may Allah have mercy on him): What makes ghusl obligatory? He said: The gushing (of semen) and the meeting (of the private parts).
