Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub, Jabir bin Abdullah and Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them) relate that when this verse, 'In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves' [Surah al-Tawbah: 108], was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar, Allah has praised you highly concerning your purification. So what is this purification of yours?" They said: O Messenger of Allah, we perform ablution for prayer and take a ritual bath (ghusl) after janabah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there anything else besides that?" They said: No, except that when one of us comes out from relieving himself, he prefers to clean himself with water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is it, so hold fast to it."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that some women from Basrah came to her. She (may Allah be pleased with her) ordered them to clean themselves with water and also said: Order your husbands to do so as well; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this, and it is a cure for haemorrhoids.
This is mursal (its chain is broken); I do not think Abu Ammar Shaddad met Aishah.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Those people used to pass dung like camel droppings, while you pass loose stool, so follow the stones with water.
(b) Mis'ar corroborated it from Abd al-Malik. It was said: This is not among the early narrations of Abd al-Malik, for Abd al-Malik narrates from young people.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): I saw myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); we had nothing to eat except the leaves of trees. This is how Shu'bah narrated it. And each one of us would pass droppings like a goat. Then Banu Asad came to reproach me concerning Islam; in that case I would indeed have suffered loss and my effort would have gone to waste.
(b) In the narration of Ibn Uyaynah: they ate the leaves of trees or a bean-like plant, and all of us would pass droppings like a goat.
