It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a dead goat belonging to a freed slave of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not remove its skin? You could have tanned it and benefited from it." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah! It is a dead animal. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only eating its (meat) is unlawful."

In the narration reported from Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wording is: "Why did you not remove its skin, then tan it and benefit from it?"
Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him), narrating from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), did not mention Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and in some places he mentions Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). It was said to him that Ma'mar (may Allah have mercy on him) did not mention the word "fa-dabaghuhu" (so they tanned it), and used to say that Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) rejected tanning. Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I remember (this hadith) better than him.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A large group narrated it from al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him), but they did not mention tanning; rather, Sufyan bin Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned (tanning), and when there are corroborating reports, the addition of a trustworthy narrator is accepted.
