Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abd al-Malik bin Marwan wrote to al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf that he must not go against Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the matter of Hajj. So when it was the day of Arafah, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to him. When the sun had passed the meridian, he called out near the tents of his pavilion, and al-Hajjaj came out in a saffron-dyed sheet and said: At this hour? He said: Yes! He said: Wait for me while I pour some water over myself. He went in, took a bath and came out, and he walked between me and my father. So I said: If you want to act according to the Sunnah today, then keep the sermon short and hasten the prayer. So he began to look towards Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so that he might hear this from him, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: He has spoken the truth.
(b) In Sahih al-Bukhari it says: Hasten the standing (wuquf).
(c) In the narration of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) it says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the standing-place after the sun had passed the meridian. In the narration of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) it says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So that you may learn the ways of your rites."
