Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, he sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the Hajj. We went with him, until, when we reached al-Arj, the iqamah for the dawn prayer was called. When he stood upright to say the opening takbir, he heard a sound behind him, so he held back from the takbir and said: "This is the sound of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), al-Jad'a'. It seems that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has also decided to perform Hajj. Perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is coming." When they looked, it was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) riding it. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Have you come as a commander or as a messenger?" He said: "Rather, I have come as a messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me with (Surah) Bara'ah, to recite it to the people at the stations of Hajj." When we came to Makkah, one day before (the Day of) Tarwiyah (the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, addressed the people and told them about the rites of Hajj, until, when he had finished, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited the whole of Bara'ah. Then we set out, until, on the Day of Arafah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood and addressed the people and told them their rites; then, when he had finished, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Bara'ah in full. Then, on the Day of Sacrifice, we went back, and when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he addressed the people and told them about their departure (ifadah), their sacrifice and their rites. When he had finished, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it. On the day of departure, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, addressed the people and told them how to depart and how to stone the pillars, and taught them their rites. When he had finished, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it.
Ibn Khuthaym alone narrated it in this way.
