Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The first time women wore a waistband, it came from the mother of Isma'il. She wore a waistband in order to hide her traces from Sayyidah Sarah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) brought her and her son, Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him), while she was nursing him, until he left them near the House. At that time there was no one in Makkah, and there was no water there. He settled the two of them there and placed beside them a bag containing dates and a waterskin containing water. Then Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned away and set off, and the mother of Isma'il followed him and said: "O Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley in which there is no companion to keep us company, nor anything?" She repeated this three times, and he did not turn to look at her. Then she said to him: "Has Allah commanded you to do this?" He said: "Yes." She said: "Then He will not let us perish." Then she went back, and Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) went on until, when he was near the House where they could not see him, he turned his face towards the House. Then he made these supplications, raising his hands, and said: "Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley without cultivation, near Your Sacred House" until he reached "so that they may be grateful" [Surah Ibrahim: 37]. The mother of Isma'il would nurse Isma'il and drink from that water, until, when what was in the waterskin ran out, she became thirsty and her son became thirsty, and he became hungry. She began looking at him writhing (or he said: tossing about), so she went off, not wanting to look at him, and she found al-Safa to be the nearest mountain to her on the earth. She stood upon it, then faced the valley, looking to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. Then she came down from al-Safa until, when she reached the valley, she lifted the hem of her garment and ran like a person in great distress until she had crossed the valley. Then she came to al-Marwah, stood upon it and looked to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She did this seven times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is why people perform the sa'i between them." When she came up onto al-Marwah, she heard a voice and said to herself: "Hush!" Then she listened carefully again and heard it, and said: "You have made me hear; if you have any help (then help)." And suddenly she was beside an angel at the place of Zamzam, who dug with his heel (or he said: with his wing) until water appeared. She began making a basin around it and scooping water into her waterskin, and it would gush forth as much as she scooped. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il! Had she left Zamzam (or he said: had she not scooped from the water), Zamzam would have been a flowing spring." So she drank and nursed her child, and the angel said to her: "Do not fear being left to perish, for here is the House of Allah which this boy and his father will build, and Allah does not let its people perish."
