أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّسَوِيُّ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ شَاكِرٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ إِذْ مَنَعَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ النِّسَاءَ الطَّوَافَ مَعَ الرِّجَالِ، قَالَ: كَيْفَ تَمْنَعُهُنَّ وَقَدْ طَافَ نِسَاءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قُلْتُ: أَبَعَدَ الْحِجَابِ أَوْ قَبْلُ؟ قَالَ: إِي لَعَمْرِي لَقَدْ أَدْرَكَتُهُ بَعْدَ الْحِجَابِ، قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ يُخَالِطْنَ الرِّجَالَ؟ قَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنْ يُخَالِطْنَ كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا تَطُوفُ حَجِرَةً مِنَ الرِّجَالِ لَا تُخَالِطُهُمْ، فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ: انْطَلِقِي نَسْتَلِمْ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، قَالَتْ: " انْطَلِقِي عَنْكِ " فَأَبَتْ فَخَرَجْنَ مُتَنَكِّرَاتٍ بِاللَّيْلِ، وَيَطُفْنَ مَعَ الرِّجَالِ وَلَكِنَّهُنَّ ⦗١٢٨⦘ كُنَّ إِذَا دَخَلْنَ الْبَيْتَ قُمْنَ حَتَّى يَدْخُلَنْ وَأُخْرِجَ الرِّجَالُ، وَكُنْتُ آتِي عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَا وَعُبَيْدٌ وَهِيَ مُجَاوِرَةٌ فِي جَوْفِ ثَبِيرٍ فَقُلْتُ: وَمَا حِجَابُهَا؟ قَالَ: هِيَ فِي قُبَّةٍ تُرْكِيَّةٍ لَهَا غِشَاءٌ وَمَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهَا غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ، وَرَأَيْتُ عَلَيْهَا دِرْعًا مُوَرَّدًا أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ هَكَذَا.
When Ibn Hisham prevented women from performing tawaf along with men, Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "How can you prevent them when the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf?" I said: "Was that before (the command of) hijab or after?" He said: "By my life, I saw it after the hijab." I said: "How did they mix with the men?" He said: "They did not mix. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) would perform tawaf keeping apart from the men, not mingling with them. A woman said: 'O Mother of the Believers, come, let us touch (the Stone).' She said: 'You go yourself,' and she refused. They would go out at night, unrecognised, and perform tawaf with the men; but when they wanted to enter the House, they would stand and wait until they could enter, and the men would be taken out. Ubayd and I used to visit Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was staying in the hollow of Thabir." I said: "And what was her screen?" He said: "She was in a Turkish dome that had a covering; there was nothing between us and her other than that, and I saw a rose-coloured garment on her."
