Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), knowing of nothing but Hajj. When we reached Sarif, I began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to me while I was weeping, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What makes you weep?" I said: By Allah! I wish I were not performing Hajj this year. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Perhaps you have begun menstruating?" I said: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. So do everything that the pilgrims do, except that you should not perform tawaf of the House until you are pure." When we came to Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Make it an Umrah." She said: All the people left ihram except those who had sacrificial animals with them. She said: The sacrificial animals were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and those of means. She said: They then set off making the talbiyah for Hajj, until, when it was the Day of Sacrifice, I became pure, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me and I performed Tawaf al-Ifadah. She said: Beef was brought to us, and I said: What is this? They said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives. She said: On the night of al-Hasbah I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): The people will return having performed Hajj and Umrah, and shall I return having performed only Hajj? So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he seated me behind him on his camel. I remember that I was a young girl, and the back of the saddle would strike my face, until we came to al-Tan'im, where I made the talbiyah for Umrah in place of the Umrah that the people had already performed.
