وَقَدْ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الشَّافِعِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، أَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، وَالْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْعُمْرَةِ أَوَاجِبَةٌ فَرِيضَةٌ كَفَرِيضَةِ الْحَجِّ، قَالَ: " لَا وَأَنْ تَعْتَمِرَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ " هَذَا هُوَ الْمَحْفُوظُ عَنْ جَابِرٍ مَوْقُوفٌ غَيْرُ مَرْفُوعٍ وَرُوِيَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ مَرْفُوعًا بِخِلَافِ ذَلِكَ وَكِلَاهُمَا ضَعِيفٌ.
Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Is Umrah obligatory, a duty like the duty of Hajj? He said: No, but if you perform Umrah, it is better for you.
This is what is preserved from Jabir, as mawquf (his own saying), not marfu'. It has also been narrated from Jabir as marfu' with the opposite (meaning), and both are da'if (weak).
