Bayhaqi 857 — A woman need not undo her braids if she knows the water

Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi heard from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman of the Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: I braid the hair of my head tightly; how should I do it when I take the ritual bath for janabah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pour three handfuls of water over your head, then splash water over the trace of each handful."
