Bayhaqi 8010 — One who eats thinking dawn has not broken

Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about a person who ate sahur thinking it was night, while dawn had already broken. He said: If it was the month of Ramadan, he completes the fast and also makes up a day. If it was outside Ramadan, then let him eat at its end, since he ate at its beginning.
The like of Ibn Sirin's view has been narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), and the like of al-Hasan's view from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him). The view of those who say he makes it up is more correct, because of the evidence that has passed that fasting is obligatory from the time dawn breaks, together with the report we narrated in this chapter. And success is from Allah.
