Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The ring of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on this; and he pointed to the little finger of his left hand.
The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: This seems to be more correct than al-Zuhri's narration from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the ring that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had made of silver. Al-Zuhri narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that "he saw a silver ring on the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for one day; then the people had silver rings made and wore them, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw away his ring, and the people threw away their rings as well." It seems that the mention of silver in this story is a slip that came onto al-Zuhri's tongue and was carried from him as an error, because the ring he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw away was gold, and after that he had a silver one made. The narration of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) shows that the ring he (peace and blessings be upon him) wore on his right hand was the gold ring, which he then threw away. So it seems that the error in the narration of Yunus from al-Zuhri from Anas lies here: Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the right hand only regarding the gold ring, as Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained, but al-Zuhri's tongue slipped to silver, and the error of mentioning the right hand with the silver ring occurred in the narration of those who narrated from al-Zuhri. And Allah knows best. Sulayman bin Bilal narrated from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, a report that indicates this reconciliation is correct: that the ring he (peace and blessings be upon him) wore on his right hand was the gold one, and the one he wore on his left hand was the silver one. And Allah knows best.
