Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote for him: These are the obligatory dues of zakah which Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have made obligatory upon the Muslims. So whoever of the Muslims is asked for it according to this, let him give it, and whoever is asked for more than that, let him not give it: "On fewer than twenty-five camels, for every five there is one goat. When they reach twenty-five, there is one bint makhad, 'a one-year-old she-camel', and this is up to thirty-five. If he does not have a bint makhad, then an ibn labun, 'a two-year-old male'. Then when they are from thirty-six up to forty-five, there is one bint labun, 'a two-year-old she-camel'. When they reach forty-six up to sixty, there is a hiqqah, 'a three-year-old she-camel', fit to bear the stud camel. When they are from sixty-one up to seventy-five, there is a jadha'ah, 'a four-year-old she-camel'. When they are from seventy-six up to ninety, there are two bint labun. When they are from ninety-one up to one hundred and twenty, there are two hiqqahs fit to bear the stud camel. When they exceed one hundred and twenty, then on every forty a bint labun and on every fifty a hiqqah. When the ages of the camels and the obligatory dues differ: whoever's zakah reaches a jadha'ah, and he has no jadha'ah but has a hiqqah, that is to be taken from him, along with two goats or twenty dirhams. Whoever's zakah reaches a hiqqah and he has a jadha'ah, the jadha'ah is to be taken from him, but the collector is to give him back twenty dirhams or two goats. Whoever's zakah reaches a hiqqah and he has a bint labun, it is to be accepted from him, and along with it twenty dirhams or two goats are also to be collected. Whoever's zakah reaches a bint labun and he has a hiqqah, it is to be accepted from him, but the collector is to give him back twenty dirhams or two goats. Whoever's zakah reaches a bint labun and he has a bint makhad, that is to be accepted from him, and along with it twenty dirhams or two goats are also to be taken. Whoever's zakah reaches a bint makhad and he has an ibn labun (male), it is to be accepted from him, with nothing along with it. Whoever has only four camels owes no zakah on them, except what their owner wishes to give. On grazing sheep, from forty up to one hundred and twenty, there is one sheep. When they exceed that, up to two hundred there are two sheep. When there is even one more, up to three hundred there are three sheep. Then if there is one more, on every hundred there is one sheep. In zakah, neither an old animal, nor a defective one, nor a billy-goat is to be taken, unless the collector wishes to take it. Separate flocks are not to be combined, nor combined flocks separated, for fear of zakah. Those who are partners will settle between themselves equally. When a man's grazing sheep are fewer than forty by even one, there is no zakah on them, except what their owner wishes to give. On silver the due is a quarter of a tenth, and when the wealth is less than two hundred dirhams, there is no zakah on it, except what its owner wishes to give."
