أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا آدَمُ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى يَقُولُ: كَانَ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ، وَقَيْسُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَاعِدَيْنِ بِالْقَادِسِيَّةِ فَمَرُّوا عَلَيْهِمَا بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَامَا، فَقِيلَ لَهُمَا: هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ أَوْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ، فَقَالَا: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جِنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّهَا جِنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: " أَلَيْسَتْ نَفْسًا " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ آدَمَ بْنِ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ.
Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sahl bin Hunayf and Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with them both) were sitting at al-Qadisiyyah when a funeral passed by, and they both stood up. It was said to them that he was one of the people of the land, that is, of the dhimmis. They said: A funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he stood up. It was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him) that it was the funeral of a Jew, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is it not a human soul?"
