أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، وَأَبُو صَادِقِ بْنُ أَبِي الْفَوَارِسِ قَالُوا: أنبأ أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الْأَصَمُّ، ثنا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْوَهْبِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ شُفَيٍّ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا غَزَاةً فِي زَمَنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَى هَذِهِ الدُّرُوبِ وَعَلَيْنَا فَضَالَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ " فَتُوُفِّيَ ابْنُ عَمٍّ لِي يُقَالُ لَهُ نَافِعُ بْنُ عَبْدٍ " قَالَ: فَقَامَ فَضَالَةُ فِي حُفْرَتِهِ، فَلَمَّا دَفَنَّاهُ قَالَ: " خَفِّفُوا عَنْهُ التُّرَابَ؛ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِتَسْوِيَةِ الْقُبُورِ ".
Thumamah bin Shufayy says: We set out on a campaign in the time of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) towards these lands, and Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) was in command over us. A cousin of mine, called Nafi' bin Abd, died. He says: Fadalah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood at his grave, and when we had buried him he said: Lighten the soil over him, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "used to order us to level the graves."
