أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، أنبأ أَبُو سَهْلِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوْحٍ الْمَدَائِنِيُّ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ، ثنا خَارِجَةُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، عَنْ أُبِيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّ آدَمَ لَمَّا مَرِضَ مَرَضَهُ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ: يَا بَنِيَّ، إِنِّي مَرِيضٌ، وَإِنِّي أَشْتَهِي مَا يَشْتَهِي الْمَرِيضُ، وَإِنِّي أَشْتَهِي مِنْ ثِمَارٍ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، فَابْغُوا لِي مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجُوا يَسْعَوْنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ، فَلَقِيَتْهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عِيَانًا، فَقَالُوا: يَا بَنِي آدَمَ، أَيْنَ تُرِيدُونَ؟ قَالُوا: نَبْغِي أَبَانَا مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَقَالَ: ارْجِعُوا، فَقَدْ أُمِرَ بِقَبْضِ رَوْحِ أَبِيكُمْ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، قَالَ: فَقَبَضُوا رُوحَهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَكَفَّنُوهُ وَحَنَّطُوهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَصَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، ثُمَّ قَالُوا: يَا بَنِي آدَمَ، هَذِهِ سُنَّتُكُمْ فِي مَوْتَاكُمْ ". يَرْفَعُهُ خَارِجَةُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ وَوَقَفَهُ هُشَيْمُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ وَزَادَ فِيهِ بَعْضُهُمْ: ثُمَّ حَفَرُوا لَهُ ثُمَّ دَفَنُوهُ، وَزَادَ: وَكَذَلِكُمْ فَافْعَلُوا..
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Adam fell ill with the illness in which he died, he said to his sons: O my sons! I am ill, and I desire what a sick person desires, and I desire fruit of Paradise. Look for it for me. They went out and began running here and there in the land. They suddenly met the angels, who said: O sons of Adam! What do you intend? They said: We are seeking fruit of Paradise for our father. The angels said: Go back, for the command has been given to take your father's soul and carry it to Paradise." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So the angels took Adam's soul while they all watched; they shrouded him and applied perfume to him while they watched, and they performed the funeral prayer over Adam while they watched. Then they said: O sons of Adam! This is your Sunnah and way regarding your dead."
Kharijah bin Mus'ab narrated it as marfu' (from the Prophet), while Hushaym bin Bashir and others narrated it from Yunus bin Ubayd as mawquf (the Companion's own words). Some of them added in it: Then they dug a grave for him and buried him; and added: So you too should do likewise.
