باب: ما يستحب من كثرة الاستغفار في خطبة الاستسقاء وأن يقول كثيرا: استغفروا ربكم إنه كان غفارا. يرسل السماء عليكم مدرارا
Chapter: It is recommended to seek forgiveness abundantly in the sermon of the prayer for rain and to say often: "Seek forgiveness of your Lord; indeed, He is ever Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance"

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ مُجَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُجَالِدٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ، ثنا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ، ثنا الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْأَشْعَثِيُّ، أنبأ عَبْثَرٌ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: " أَصَابَ النَّاسَ قَحْطٌ فِي عَهْدِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَصَعِدَ عُمَرُ الْمِنْبَرَ فَاسْتَسْقَى، فَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى الِاسْتِغْفَارِ حَتَّى نَزَلَ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: مَا سَمِعْنَاكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اسْتَسْقَيْتَ فَقَالَ: " لَقَدْ طَلَبْتُ الْغَيْثَ بِمَفَاتِيحِ السَّمَاءِ الَّتِي بِهَا يُسْتَنْزَلُ الْمَطَرُ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا. يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا} [نوح: ١١]، وَقَوْلُهُ {وَيَا قَوْمِ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَى قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا مُجْرِمِينَ} [هود: ٥٢]، فَاسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ ". كَذَا وَجَدْتُهُ فِي كِتَابِي بِمَفَاتِيحِ السَّمَاءِ، وَرَوَاهُ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ فَقَالَ: بِمَجَادِيحِ السَّمَاءِ.
Al-Sha'bi narrates that in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the people were struck by drought, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) climbed the pulpit. He led the supplication for rain but did nothing other than repent and seek forgiveness, until he came down from the pulpit. The people said: We did not hear you ask for rain at all, O Commander of the Believers! He said: I have indeed sought rain through the keys of the heaven by which rain is sent down. Then he recited these blessed verses: "Seek forgiveness of your Lord; indeed, He is ever Most Forgiving. He will send down the sky upon you in abundant rain." [Surah Nuh: 10-11], "and He will add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as criminals." [Surah Hud: 52] and "And seek forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him." [Surah Hud: 90]. I have found it thus in my book: 'bi-mafatih al-sama'' (through the keys of the heaven), and Mutarrif said: 'bi-majadih al-sama'' (through these channels of the heaven).
