Abu Ja'far al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was present at the house of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was besieged. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. I passed through the mosque, and there was a man calling out in the women's shaded area, sitting with his knees drawn up and his sword wrapped around them, wearing a black turban. It was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: What happened to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: He has been martyred. He said: Ruin be upon you for all time.
