أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نَصْرِ بْنُ قَتَادَةَ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ السَّرَّاجُ، ثنا أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا الْعَيْشِيُّ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَى عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَقَدْ خَرَجَ لِصَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَعَلِيٌّ يَقُولُ: اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، اللهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي، اللهُمَّ تُبْ عَلَيَّ، فَضَرَبَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى مَنْكِبِهِ، وَقَالَ: " أَعْمِمْ، فَفَضْلُ مَا بَيْنَ الْعُمُومِ وَالْخُصُوصِ كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ ". أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فِي الْمَرَاسِيلِ.
Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He had come out for the Fajr prayer and was saying: 'Allahumma ighfir li, Allahumma irhamni, Allahumma tub 'alayya' (O Allah, forgive me; O Allah, have mercy on me; O Allah, accept my repentance). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him on his shoulder and said: "Make the supplication general, for the difference in merit between the general and the specific is like the difference between the heaven and the earth."
