Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf to make peace between them, and the time of prayer came. The muezzin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Will you lead the people in prayer, so that I may call the iqamah?" He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes," and he (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came while the people were in prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way through (the rows) and stood in the row. Then the people began clapping, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around in prayer. When the people clapped a great deal, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him: "Stay in your place." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back and stood in the row. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from remaining firm in your place?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why is it that I see you clapping so much? When something happens to anyone in the prayer, let him say 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah), for when he says 'Subhan Allah', attention will be paid to him; clapping is only for women."
