Bayhaqi 4681 — The number of rak'ahs of the night prayer

Kurayb says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he mentioned the long hadith. In it is: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, and I stood at his left side, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved me to his right. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my head; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was touching my ears as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) were waking me up. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two light rak'ahs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah al-Fatihah in each rak'ah, then said the salam; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs, then said the salam, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed eleven rak'ahs including the witr. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) slept. I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) snoring. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! The prayer!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and prayed two rak'ahs, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer and did not perform ablution.
(b) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: There is no prophet whose eyes sleep but that his heart stays awake, and if his heart sleeps, his eyes stay awake.
